Major in Medicine at Paulista School of Medicine (1976), with residency in Pediatrics (77-78) and Preventive Medicine (79) at the same institution. Began career in public health physician in the Department of Health in 1980. In 1982, obtained the MSc in Community Medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSH & TM). In 1984, began a teaching career in the Department of Epidemiology, Department of Preventive Medicine of EPM. In 1987, he earned a PhD from the University of London with the first population study of elderly in Brazil. In 1989, he moved to the Department of Medicine, EPM and began forming the discipline of Geriatrics, which was made official in 1994. Since 1991, directs the Center for the Study of Aging and coordinates the first Brazilian cohort of elderly residents community (Project Epidoso) which remain to this day, with funding from FAPESP and Cnpq. In 1996, with support from FAPESP, did postdoctoral studies at Harvard University in the area of ​​neuropsicogeriatria. In 1997, he was awarded a Full Professor in Geriatrics at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Exercised leadership in the Department of Geriatrics 1997-2002. Obtained in 2004 by opening contest Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine, UNIFESP. The Master's or PhD in Public Health UNIFESP 2006 to 2010 was head of the Department 2005-11. Coordinated and belonged to the advisory committee in the area of ​​Public Health at CAPES in the triennium 2004-06. Guidelines has 52 master's and 19 doctoral guidelines completed to date and 127 publications in indexed journals, two books and 19 book chapters. Research areas: epidemiology of aging (CNPq Research Group), health promotion, cognition in the elderly, physical activity in the elderly.
