A seguir, referências sobre o orientalismo como noção ideológica e/ou crítica da alteridade Oriente/Ocidente. Compreende tanto materiais anteriores nos quais Said baseou a sua noção teórica (tais como Tibawi e Abdel-Malek), estudos orientalistas de referência para a crítica e outros materiais que fundamentam a noção paralela de “ocidentalismo”, que emerge no mundo islâmico entre fins do século XIX e início do XX (difundido por Al Afghani no mundo sunita e pelos ideólogos xiitas da Revolução islâmica no Irã, Ale Ahmad e Ayatolah Khomeini). A importância de incluir esse material aqui é que a pré-existência dessa noção simétrica ao orientalismo no mundo islâmico, anti-ocidental e formulada a partir de uma identidade oriental amalgamada à islâmica, ignorada por Said à época da primeira edição do Orientalismo, deu margem ao polêmico debate sobre o tema, iniciado com as críticas recebidas por Said de diversos historiadores e sociólogos importantes da intelectualidade árabe (tais como Al Asmeh e Al Azim). Além disso, essa noção anti-ocidentalista também iria favorecer a aderência distorcida da própria crítica saidiada entre pensadores de tendência islamista, tal como o autor irá reconhecer e refutar ao comentar as traduções não autorizadas e mal editadas da sua obra para o árabe e o persa.  A organização é cronológica (por ano da primeira publicação), para facilitar a pesquisa do desenvolvimento histórico do debate.
