Indian Citizen?
Indian Citizen? is a documentary about the struggle of the Brazilian indigenous nations for the conquest and maintenance of the constitutional rights conquered in the Constitution of 1987/88. The film rescues two key moments in this process: the popular campaign of indigenous peoples in the Constituent Assembly and the period of demonstrations in Brasília against the legislative attacks of the National Congress, with the occupation of the Chamber of Deputies in Abril Indígena 2013 and the National Indigenous Mobilization in October of the same year.
Anchored in testimonies and public speeches by important indigenous leaders, such as chief Raoni Metuktire, Ailton Krenak, Sonia Guajajara, Davi Yanomami, Alvaro Tukano, among others, the film brings historical and contemporary episodes of the indigenous struggle in the political debate of the National Congress, telling with unprecedented elements, the result of intense research of public and private collections.
The title Indian Citizen? in a tone of question, is a provocation that invites the viewer to reflect and understand the perspective of the original peoples regarding political confrontations for the guarantee of the original rights to the land and respect for the traditional way of life. That is why the film, throughout its 52 minutes, is all presented and narrated by the Indians, especially by the testimony of the leadership Valdelice Veron, who conducts the documentary. Under constant death threats and the plundering of traditional land, she exposes the drama of genocide that her nation, the Kaiowá Guarani, have been experiencing for decades in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Valdelice witnessed the murder of her father, chief Marcos Veron, during the process of retaking their land Tekoha Takuara in 2003.
